PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the objective product in high yield using a solvent that is highly safe in itself, generates no toxic substances even if decomposed by overheating and is easy to recycle as well. SOLUTION: The method for producing the objective product, a 3-arylamino-2-alkoxycarbonyl-4-quinolone compound, comprises heating a 1,2-diarylamino-1,2-ethylenedicarboxylic acid dialkyl ester in an organic solvent to effect a first cyclization, wherein an aliphatic hydrocarbon 215-270°C in boiling point at ordinary pressure is used as the organic solvent.
