PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a premelting method for glass raw material by which the glass raw material is efficiently premelted in a short period of time, thus melting treatment for glass can be economically performed. SOLUTION: The glass raw material is fed into the flame of an oxygen burner and is premelted. It is preferable to use an oxygen burner in which nozzles at the tip face are arranged in a concentric fashion as the whole in the order of a fuel feed nozzle, a gas feed nozzle for primary combustion, glass raw material feed nozzles and gas feed nozzles for secondary combustion from the central part to the outer circumferential part, the flame is burnt downward, and the glass raw material is fed into the flame by gas conveyance to be premelted.
