PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize stable roller coating even when a recording medium is carried intermittently during the coating, in a roller coating system in which a special reaction material is applied to a recording medium with a roller to improve the quality of formed images before or after formation of an image with e.g. an ink or a toner. SOLUTION: The timing of stopping the rotation of the carrying assist roller before or after the coating roller is shifted slightly to control the rotation of individual rollers so that the recording medium is separated, or floated, from the coating roller on stopping of the recording medium. At the time of resumption of the rotation, the recording medium is brought again into contact with the coating roller, while the reaction material is brought into contact with predetermined parts of the coating roller so as to be applied continuously to the reaction medium.
