The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of (S)-(-)-alpha-ethyl-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine acetamide and analogues thereof. The invention also relates to compounds of the general formula (6) wherein R<SUP>1 </SUP>is methyl or ethyl; and R<SUP>2 </SUP>is C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>4 </SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>4 </SUB>alkenyl or C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>4 </SUB>alkynyl, optionally substituted by one or more halogen, and their preparation processes.
