The method involves storing the useful data (38) in the memory (48) of the mobile unit (10) at least partly in encoded form and decoding the useful data during access processes using a decoding function provided by a user module (12). The data are encoded during storage processes by a function provided by the user module. Independent claims are also included for the following: a mobile unit, especially a mobile telephone or personal digital assistant and a user module, especially a subscriber identification module for a telecommunications network.
