摘要 <p>It is possible to provide a liquid crystal device capable of effectively suppressing a light leak even when the liquid crystal cannot completely maintain the homeotropic orientation state and is fixed. The liquid crystal device (1) includes substrates (3, 4) opposing to each other so as to sandwich a liquid crystal layer (2) containing liquid crystal capable of varying the orientation state, a first polarizing plate (5) and a second polarizing plate (6) arranged to sandwich the opposing substrates and with absorption axes intersecting orthogonally. Between the first polarizing plate (5) and the second polarizing plate (6), a birefringence layer (7) is formed by polymerizing the polymerizable liquid crystal with an optical axis inclined with respect to the thickness direction of the birefringence layer (7). The birefringence layer (7) has an optical axis inclined in the direction of the absorption axis of the first polarizing plate (5) or the second polarizing plate (6) with respect to the thickness direction of the birefringence layer (7).</p>
