A DECOMPOSITION CATALYST

A decomposition catalyst which has excellent degradation effects of odor, organic matters and non-biodegradable materials even in the visible light range due to a low energy band gap, is prepared easily, and is easily applicable to a carrier such as paper, non-woven fabric, or fibers, an odor degrading composition comprising the catalyst, and an odor degrading article using the composition are provided. A decomposition catalyst is represented by the formula RVO4, where R is Bi, Yb, or Y. The decomposition catalyst is prepared by mixing 0.01 to 0.9 mol/L of a soluble salt containing R with 0.01 to 0.9 mol/L of a vanadium compound, agitating the mixture, aging the agitated material, cleaning the aged material with water, and drying the cleaned material. The decomposition catalyst has an energy band gap of 2.2 to 2.4 eV. The decomposition catalyst has an average particle diameter of 0.01 to 100 mum. The decomposition catalyst has degradation performance relative to odor, organic matters, or non-biodegradable materials.
