[PROBLEMS] To provide an optical film for liquid crystal display that when used in a liquid crystal display, avoids decoloration (coloration) and exerts desirable viewing angle compensating effects, such as attainment of high contrast in all directions. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] There is provided an optical film characterized in that it comprises at least one film (a) layer of cycloolefin resin exhibiting a positive birefringence and, superimposed thereon, a film (b) layer of polymer exhibiting a negative birefringence, satisfying the relationships of the formulae: (1) 0.1 <=Nz coefficient <=0.9, (2) 0.5 <=R450/R550 <=0.9, (3) 1.0 <=R650/R550 <=1.3, and (4) 200 nm <=R550 <=350 nm (wherein R450, R550 and R650 represent phase contrasts (R) at 450 nm, 550 nm and 650 nm wavelength, respectively).
