A digital broadcasting system and a digital broadcasting processing method are provided to improve the receiving performance of a receiving system in which channel change is excessively frequent by inserting known data into a specific position of a data area and transmitting the resultant data. An E-VSB(Vestigial Side Band) pre-processor(101) expands N bite enhanced data into M bite enhanced data by inserting null data into the N bite enhanced data, wherein N and M are positive integers, and N<M. An enhanced data processor performs at least non-systematic RS parity place holder insertion, data interleaving, and non-systematic RS encoding on each bite within an enhanced data packet, which includes at least one of the enhanced data and known data. The enhanced data processor outputs the performing result in the symbol unit. A data generator(110) generates the known data in a symbol area. If symbol data outputted from the enhanced data processor are enhanced data, an E-VSB symbol processor(109) encodes only the enhanced data before bite expansion at an encoding rate of N/M satisfying N<M, and outputs the encoded data. If the symbol data are known data, the E-VSB symbol processor outputs the known data generated from the known data generator without encoding at the encoding rate of N/M satisfying N<M.
