The unit (16A-C) has an infrared light emitting diode for emitting light rays for a wheel positioning measurement in a vehicle longitudinal/ transverse direction opposite to the unit. A beam splitter is arranged in front of an optical sensor (1) and a light source (4). The sensor and a lens (2) are arranged in a sensor housing (8) shadowed by ambient light. The housing has a visible opening for an optical path. The source is arranged on the upper or lower side of the visible opening. A day light filter is arranged in front of the opening of the optical shadowed partial region.
