An apparatus and a method for protecting broadcasting contents are provided to prevent contents such as broadcasting programs, which are stored in a storage unit, from being illegally used, thereby safely using the broadcasting programs. A key storing unit(251) stores a system key and a share key. A contents storing unit stores contents. An encoding and decoding unit(252) selectively uses the system key and the share to encode the stored contents and decode the reproduced contents. A contents managing unit(253) controls the decoding/encoding of the contents. The key storing unit and the contents storing unit have different memories. The system key and the share key are periodically updated.
