1363371 Electro-medical apparatus L'ELECTRONIQUE MEDICALE SERDAL SA 17 March 1972 [19 March 1971 28 April 1971] 12660/72 Heading G1N A parameter which characterizes the operation of a device implanted in a living organism and of an organ of the organism is converted into a potential difference which is converted into pulses of coded frequency, the pulses being transmitted through the skin of the organism to a receiver and converter. As shown in Fig.1, the current supplied by a pacemaker 2 to the heart 3 of the organism is converted into a voltage (across resistor 1), the voltage being applied to a voltage-to-frequency converter 4 whose output signal is applied to a pair of electrodes 6, 7 positioned beneath the skin 8 of the organism. The signal transmitted by electrodes 6, 7 are picked up by electrodes 16, 17 connected to a frequency-to-voltage converter 5 and a display 12. Alternatively the voltage supplied by batteries to the pacemaker 4 may be the monitored parameter, Fig. 2 (not shown). The electrode 6 may be a ring electrode, and the electrode 7 a circular disc positioned inside the electrode 6, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The threshold of stimulation of the heart by the pacemaker may be determined, either by monitoring the current supplied by the pacemaker to the heart as the voltage supply to the pacemaker is decreased from a maximum or by monitoring the voltage supply as it is decreased from a maximum, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). In these methods a magnetically operated switch is operated so that the pacemaker 2 and converter 4 are disconnected from their constant voltage supply and connected to a series of photo-cells positioned beneath the skin, the cells being illuminated through the skin by a light source whose intensity is varied to thereby vary the voltage supply to the pacemaker. By monitoring the operation of the heart as the voltage supply is decreased, the threshold of stimulation may be determined. |
