A water pump is provided to automatically adjust a pressure difference between front and rear surfaces of an impeller to prevent damage to some components due to excessive pressure difference. A water pump includes a return line(17a), a valve retainer(21), a valve plunger(22), and elastic members. The return line axially passes through an impeller adapter(17). The valve retainer has a hollow center part to be in communication with the impeller adapter and fastened to the impeller adapter. The valve plunger is restrained by the valve retainer to selectively open the return line. The elastic members resiliently support the valve plunger by using the valve retainer. The return line is formed at the impeller adapter to function as a passage for returning cooling water. The impeller adapter is provided to fasten the impeller to a cooling water pump housing.
