An electrochromic device is provided, which uses white background nanoparticles dispersed uniformly in an electrolyte, and thus shows a high reflectance. The electrochromic device is obtained by the method comprising the steps of: (a) providing a first electrode and a second electrode, at least one of which comprises an electrochromic substance; (b) injecting an electrolyte precursor solution comprising (i) an ionic liquid, (ii) a monomer capable of forming a gel polymer via polymerization, (iii) white background particles with conductivity, and (iv) a polymerization initiator, between the first electrode and the second electrode, and then sealing the resultant structure; and (c) polymerizing the electrolyte precursor solution to form a gel polymer electrolyte containing the white background particles.
