A hydraulic liquid, for use in a hydropneumatic shock absorber, and which is non- absorbent to the gas forming the pneumatic cushion, is pre-saturated with a gas, e.g. nitrogen, pressurisation being effected in a container in which the gas and liquid are in direct contact at a pressure of at least 70 atmospheres absolute pressure. The gas dissolved into the liquid may be the same, or different from, the gas used in the pneumatic cushion. In apparatus for pressurising a gas, Fig. 1, the gas, preferably nitrogen, is delivered from a pressure flask 4, through reducing and check valves 5, 7 respectively to a pressure chamber 1 containing hydraulic liquid 2 introduced through a pipe 12 with a check valve 10. When the desired pressurisation has been obtained the liquid is passed through a line 8 with a check valve 9 to the hydropneumatic shock-absorber to be filled. Pressurised liquid can be drawn off continuously from a plant in which nitrogen is supplied to a pressure chamber as shown in Fig. 1, and fluid is introduced into the chamber 1 by a gear pump driven by an electric motor the latter being supplied through a switch controlled by a float on the surface of the liquid in the container. |
