An apparatus and a method for automatically calibrating volume levels are provided to enable the user of a cellular phone to listen to sounds at a uniform level by automatically adjusting volume levels according to surrounding noises. An apparatus for automatically calibrating volume levels in a portable communication device comprises a speaker, a volume level measuring device(10), and a control part(30). The volume level measuring device measures the level of surrounding noises. The control part calibrates the volume level of the output of the speaker according to the output of the volume level measuring device. The volume level measuring device comprises a microphone(11) and an amplifier(13). The microphone collects surrounding noises. The amplifier amplifies the output of the microphone.
