An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to supply a desired black gamma reference voltage regardless of inner resistances due to surrounding circumference, thereby maintaining a desired black brightness, by controlling a level of black gamma reference voltage supplied to an LCD panel. A data driving unit(120) supplies black voltage to an LCD panel(110). A controller(220) controls a level of black gamma reference voltage, which is supplied to the data driving unit according to a newly set black brightness level. A gamma reference voltage generator(230) generates the black gamma reference voltage in proportion to resistance value varied by the controller. The gamma reference voltage generator includes a positive polarity gamma reference voltage generating part and a negative polarity gamma reference voltage generating part. |
