A mobile communication terminal and a method for outputting an audio signal in the mobile terminal are provided to allow a user to listen to an audio signal having a multimedia file, reproduced in the mobile terminal, through a multi-channel sound system as well as a stereo sound system. It is determined whether audio data of a multimedia file to be reproduced are encoded in a multi-channel sound format(S1). If the audio data are encoded in multi-channel sound format, a path is set such that an audio signal, which can be processed in a multi-channel sound system, is output to an exterior. A digital audio signal for signal processing is extracted from the audio data of the multimedia file, and then decoded such that the digital audio signal is processed in the multi-channel sound system through the set path(S4). The decoded digital audio signal is transmitted to an exterior(S6).
