The circuit has a current controller (18) provided with a switch (19) that engages a load and switching/dimming switching positions. A positive direct current (DC) voltage connection is connected with a negative DC voltage connection of a bridge rectifier via a load-series resistor (20) and a storage capacitor (31) in the load switching position and via an ignite-series resistor (21) in the switching/dimming position. Control of the switch takes place via a control unit (25). The switch is brought into the load switching position during a preset load time period of each network half-cycle.
