Open hole-based diffractive light modulator

An open hole-based diffractive light modulator includes a ribbon shaped first micromirror (520g) supported at either end by a substrate (501g) and including a plurality of holes (531g) formed through an intermediate portion of the first micromirror; a second micromirror (510g) located between and spaced apart from the first micromirror (520g) and the substrate (501g); wherein the second micromirror is movable by an actuating unit in a vertical direction to vary the distance between the first and second micromirrors and hence change the intensity of light diffracted from the modulator.
