A method and an apparatus for forming and transmitting a message for the setting of a background image, and a method and an apparatus for setting the background image to a mobile communication terminal using information about the formation of the message are provided to make an SMIL message controlled by contents supported by a reception terminal. A message is drawn out(S201). A phone number of a mobile terminal of a receiver is input(S203). An indicator is added in order to indicate whether a background image is set to the message depending on whether or not the setting of the background image for the mobile terminal of the receiver is accepted(S209). The message is a synchronized multimedia integration language(SMIL) message. The impossibility of setting of the background image is notified to a user by using a pop-up function.
