Provided is a method for preparing ethylcyclohexane by selectively hydrogenating 4-vinylcyclohexene, whereby an easily reproducible and inexpensive catalyst is used, a spatial and temporal yield and selectivity are high, and the reaction condition is mild. The method for preparing ethylcyclohexane by selectively hydrogenating 4-vinylcyclohexene consists of using a metallic ruthenium as a catalyst, wherein solvent is not used. The hydrogenation is carried out at 0-200 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of 1-300bar using 0.001-10mol%, based on 4-vinylcyclohexene to be used, of a metallic ruthenium. The catalyst is a metallic ruthenium on a supporter selected from activated carbon, alumina, silica, titania, carbon black, and graphite.
