METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR USER EQUIPMENT DIRECTED RADIO RESOURCE CONTROL IN A UMTS NETWORK

A method and an apparatus for controlling radio resources related to user equipments in a UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) network are provided to carry out mode or state transition on the base of what a UE(User Equipment) initiates the completion of a signaling connection for an appointed core network domain or informs a UTRAN(Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network) that transition should be made from a connection state to another connection state. In order to improve the performance of the battery of a UE in a radio network having a plurality of RRC(Radio Resource Control) states, the UE monitors the data exchange of an application. The UE determines when the application is expected to stop the exchange of data. The UE tears down the signaling connection setup with the radio network. Then the UE initiates transition to a less battery demanding RRC state or mode.
