A vehicle article carrier having a single sided release cross bar is provided to improve the use efficiency by arbitrarily adjusting a position at a side of a vehicle or installing and removing an article carrying system. First and second supporting rails(12,14) are fixed on a vehicle to be arranged to each other in parallel. A cross bar assembly body(26) has a cross bar, a first stepped supporting assembly body(30) which is arranged on a first stepped unit of the cross bar, and a second stepped supporting assembly body(32) which is arranged on a second stepped unit of the cross bar. One of the stepped supporting assembly bodies is slidably fixed on the independent stepped unit of the cross bar. The first stepped supporting assembly body has a first hanging member. The second stepped supporting assembly body has a second hanging member. A inclination member is related to be operated with one of the stepped supporting assembly bodies to incline the first and the second hanging members toward each other. The stepped supporting assembly body which is slidably fixed detaches the hanging member from a supporting rail and attaches the hanging member to the supporting rail by moving the cross bar assembly linearly. The cross bar assembly bar is attached to the supporting rail and is detached from the supporting rail.
