An apparatus and a method for controlling white balance of an image display apparatus are provided to maintain consistent white balance by installing a CCD(Charge Coupled Device) for detecting an RGB(Red, Green and Blue) value of an image displayed on a display part and comparing the detected RGB value with an RGB value outputted to the display part. It is determined whether an automatic white balance control function is selected(S10). If the automatic white balance control function is selected, a highlight white pattern is displayed(S12). An RGB value of an image inputted through a sensing device is measured(S14). The measured RGB value is compared with an RGB value of the displayed highlight white pattern(S16). A gain of the RGB value of the highlight white pattern is controlled if the two compared RGB values are not equal to each other(S18). A low-light white pattern is displayed if the two compared RGB values are equal to each other(S20). An RGB value of an image inputted through the sensing device is measured(S22). The measured RGB value is compared with an RGB value of the displayed low-light white pattern(S24).
