A discharge lamp having a surface segmentation brightness control function is provided to individually perform brightness control by dividing discharge regions of a flat type discharge lamp using plural barrier ribs. A discharge lamp includes a flat type discharge lamp(10), plural barrier ribs(20), plural grooves(18), and plural discharge electrodes(12,14). The flat type discharge lamp is charged by discharge gas. The plural barrier ribs define plural discharge regions(16) in the flat type discharge lamp in parallel. The plural grooves are formed at the barrier ribs in order to exchange the discharge gas between adjacent discharge regions. The plural discharge electrodes are formed at both lateral walls of the plural discharge regions.
