A refrigerator and a method of controlling the same are provided to minimize a decrease of refrigerating efficiency caused by a defrost operation of each storage compartments. A method of controlling a refrigerator includes the steps of checking if a defrosting operation is necessary(402) when the defrosting necessary, checking if a defrosting for a freezer/secondary freezer is operated or for a refrigerator/secondary refrigerator at prior defrosting operation(404), defrosting total store room at the same time when the refrigerator and the freezer is overloaded(410). If the prior defrosting operation was for freezer/secondary freezer and the refrigerator and the freezer are not overloaded and the set temperature of the secondary freezer is higher than 0°C, defrosting the store room, a secondary storeroom, and the secondary freezer(414), defrosting a freezer and a secondary freezer after defrosting a refrigerator and a secondary refrigerator first if a prior defrosting operation is for freezer/secondary freezer, a refrigerator and a freezer are not overloaded, and a set temperature of the secondary freezer is below 0°C(416), defrosting all four store rooms at the same time if the prior defrosting operation is for refrigerator/secondary refrigerator, a refrigerator and a freezer are not overloaded, and a set temperature of the secondary freezer are below 0°C, and defrosting a refrigerator and a secondary refrigerator after defrosting a freezer and a secondary freezer if the prior defrosting is for refrigerator/secondary refrigerator, a refrigerator and a freezer are not overloaded, and a set temperature of the secondary freezer is higher than 0°C(420).
