An apparatus and a method for converting a preferred color are provided to split the color space of a preferred color selected by a user into a plurality of regions according to color distribution characteristic, and convert the color of a region of an inputted image, which corresponds to the preferred color, into the color of an appropriate split region of the plurality of split regions to express regions included in the preferred color in consideration of colors of a surrounding image. An apparatus for converting a preferred color includes an image extractor(120), an image analyzer(130), a color space extractor(140), and a color converter(160). The image extractor extracts at least one image region including a user's preferred color from an inputted image. The image analyzer analyzes a color distribution characteristic of the extracted image region. The color space extractor extracts a split space corresponding to the color distribution characteristic from split spaces included in the color space of the preferred color. The color converter converts the color of the image region by using a color conversion model corresponding to the extracted split space.
