The method involves writing a bit (RB) with a program status of a binary word to be written (D) in a memory cell of an erasable programmable read only memory (MEM). A bit (MB) of a write word in the memory corresponding to the bit (RB) is read. The bit (RB) is compared with the bit (MB), and an error signal is generated when the bit (RB) is different from the bit (MB) of the write word. An independent claim is also included for an integrated circuit comprising an electrically programmable memory.
