A graphite material having the properties of small specific surface area and average particle diameter while maintaining high discharge capacity and initial efficiency at the time of initial charge-discharge is obtained by pulverizing a carbon material, such as green coke, of 5 to 20 mass% loss on heat as measured by heating from 300° to 1000°C in an inert atmosphere and graphitizing the pulverized carbon material. The graphite material is suitable for use as, for example, a carbon material for negative electrode of lithium ion secondary battery from which an electrode having not only high energy density but also high current load characteristic can be produced. Using this graphite material, there is produced a battery electrode. |
