The method involves analyzing a non-volatile indicator that is stored in a portable data carrier. A response behavior of the data carrier is changed depending on the analyzing result, and a part of an unlocking code (PUK) is transmitted. The indicator is changed in response to the reception of a command that shows on the PUK and user identification code (PIN), when a readable access takes place on the PUK for a reading process. The changes of the user PIN are forced by the data carrier before the user PIN is verified, to enable the function of the data carrier stored by the user PIN. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a portable data carrier with a function, whose utilization is stored by user identification (2) a system including a portable data carrier and a terminal of a user (3) a system for providing a set of data carriers.
