The system has an surrounding detection sensor which is formed as a proximity sensor that measures a transit time of an infrared radiation pulse to determine a relative speed between a motor vehicle and an object. A rain sensor is provided with a camera having low- resolution. The sensors are arranged in a common housing, and a common evaluation unit is provided for evaluation of sensor data. The data of the rain sensor are utilized for evaluation of the data of the detection sensor and/or for activation of heating units and/or for ventilation.
