PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet size detecting apparatus in which erroneous detection of sheet size is prevented from occurring while suppressing cost. SOLUTION: The output level of a photo interrupter 21 when only either one of a first arm 5a and a second arm 5b is moved is the same as the output level when both the first arm 5a and the second arm 5b are not moved. The output level of the photo interrupter 21 when both the first arm 5a and the second arm 5b are moved is different from that when both the first arm 5a and the second arm 5b are not moved.
