PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval system and an image retrieval method, wherein a proper characteristic quantity and dictionary data for retrieval are selected according to the kinds of a retrieval source image and a retrieval destination image and a combination thereof even if the proper characteristic quantity for the retrieval differs by the kind of the image to perform the high-accuracy and efficient retrieval, and to provide an image registration system and an image registration method for registering the dictionary data. SOLUTION: Even if the proper characteristic quantity for the retrieval differs by the kind of the image, the dictionary data wherein one kind of the image is registered to one characteristic quantity thereamong, and the dictionary data wherein all kinds of the images are registered to the other characteristic quantities are prepared, and the characteristic quantity for the retrieval and the dictionary data corresponding thereto are changed over according to the kind of the retrieval source image to perform the highly-accurate and efficient retrieval.
