PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic controller for an automatic transmission capable of performing proper running of a vehicle after a solenoid valve device causes a failure by setting a fail safe gear stage corresponding to a condition of the vehicle. SOLUTION: Since a fail safe gear stage change-over valve 120 held at either of a first position for achieving a low speed side fail safe gear stage (a third speed gear stage) and a second position for achieving a high speed side fail safe gear stage (a fifth speed gear stage) is held at the second position based on line oil pressure P<SB>L1</SB>in a condition of failure of the solenoid valve device, the fail safe gear stage is set to two stages by the third speed gear stage and the fifth speed gear stage in accordance with a condition of the vehicle immediately before a failure condition of the fail safe gear stage, the second position is held even if D to N operation is performed during running at the fifth speed gear stage, and the fifth speed gear stage is achieved again even if a shift lever 72 is operated to "D" position.
