PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormal condition of load sensors 30R, 30L without fail, in an electric power steering device carrying out steering assist control by calculating rack axial force from output signals of the load sensor 30R, 30L provided at right and left tie rods 15. SOLUTION: The sensor outputs of the right and left load sensors 30R, 30L are compared. When the sensor output of one load sensor is changed and the sensor output of the other is fixed, or when the sensor outputs of both right and left sensors 30R, 30L take positive or negative values, it is judged that either one of the load sensor 30R(L) is in failure. Furthermore, the sensor output of a yaw-rate sensor 50 and the sensor output of the load sensors 30R, 30L are compared, thereby specifying the load sensor 30R(L) on a failure side.
