PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generating material capable of generating hydrogen even at low temperature and capable of preserving the hydrogen in a solid state. SOLUTION: The hydrogen generating material comprises a metal amide and metal hydroxide. The hydrogen generating material is heated, and the metal amide and metal hydroxide are reacted, so as to generate hydrogen. Since the reaction between the metal amide and metal hydroxide progresses at a temperature lower than 320°C, the amount of the energy used for hydrogen generation can be reduced compared with the conventional case, and also, a hydrogen generator provided with the hydrogen generating material can be miniaturized. Since the hydrogen is preserved in a solid state in the hydrogen generating material before the heating, namely, the hydrogen is, as a constituting element, taken into the metal amide and metal hydroxide as solid substances, the weight and size of the whole device can be compacted without imparting high pressure resistance to the hydrogen generator provided with the hydrogen generating material.
