PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel gas generator for an internal combustion engine which enables continuous operation without requiring complicated maintenance in driving the internal combustion engine with the use of ligneous chips in a relatively small-scale facilities. SOLUTION: This fuel gas generator is used in an apparatus for generating electricity with the use of an engine and has a carbonization furnace 1, a gasification furnace 2, a gas reforming furnace 3, a gas treatment furnace 4, a cleaning retention chamber 5, a filtering device 6, a gas storage tank 7, an engine 8, a generator 9, and a control apparatus 10 for controlling each equipment. Ligneous chips 11 are heated in the carbonization furnace 1 and impurities such as water and tar present in the ligneous chips 11 are burnt by a carbonization burner 15 to carbonize the ligneous chips 11. In the gasification furnace 2, the carbonized product is partially burnt and is supplied together with steam to generate a combustible gas 35. This combustible gas 35 is reformed in the reforming furnace 3, cleaned by the filtering device 6, and used as a fuel of the engine 8.
