PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic method for trithiocarbonate useful as a RAFT agent which is efficient and can be practiced on a large scale. SOLUTION: This synthetic method of trithiocarbonate comprises a process of forming a mixture containing a product RSC(S)SR' and a by-product which is a salt of chlorine, bromine, or iodine, by reacting, in a water/alcohol solvent medium, a thiol having a formula RSH with an aqueous base, carbon disulfide, and an alkylating agent having a formula R'X (wherein X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine) in this order.
