PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide inexpensively a shift controller which prevents occurrence of erroneous detection caused by a contaminant such as cutting chips in a select position sensor. SOLUTION: The shift controller is provided with: a motor for giving drive force to a range switching shaft 12 of an automatic transmission AT; a select position sensor 20 for detecting a position of a select lever 11, based on the connection state of a brush integrally rotated with the select lever 11 and a resistance body; and a control unit 18 for driving the motor 16 according to an operation direction of the select lever 11 based on the detection of the torque sensor 19. When a previously set operation starting determination condition is effected, the control unit 18 makes wiping control for driving the motor 16 such that the select lever 11 is over-stroked from a range of at least one end in a usually used range to the outside by a predetermined amount than the usually used range.
