PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a homeotropic alignment type liquid crystal display device which can be improved in brightness and response speed more. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes a linear first structure, a second structure, and an auxiliary structure which control alignment of liquid crystal, and the second substrate includes a linear third structure and a fourth structure which control the alignment of the liquid crystal. The first structure and second structure extend in mutually different directions in one pixel; and the third structure extends in parallel to the first structure and the fourth structure extends in parallel to the second structure respectively in the pixel. The first, second, third, and fourth structures extend in the directions different from directions in which an edge of the pixel extends, and the auxiliary structure extends in parallel to or at right angles to the direction in which the edge of the pixel extends.
