A method for activating PPARgamma or inhibiting NO production with an effective amount of a vinylsulfonate or vinylsulfonamide compound of the following formula: wherein Ar<SUB>1 </SUB>is aryl or heteroaryl, each of R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB>, and R<SUB>3</SUB>, independently, is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, cyclyl, heteroaryl, or heterocyclyl, X is O or NR, R being hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, cyclyl, heteroaryl, or heterocyclyl, and n is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. This invention also covers a method of treating a NO-related disease or PPARgamma-related disease with such a vinylsulfonate or vinylsulfonamide compound.
