PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can reduce printing time. SOLUTION: A printer 1 comprises a recording head 34 to discharge ink from a plurality of ink discharge nozzles 35 to a printing medium P, a carriage 32 to scan the printing medium P conveyed to a printing region opposite to the recording head 34, carrier rollers 16 (14, 18) to convey the printing medium P fed to the printing region by every predetermined amount, a printing medium detection sensor 51 to detect the presence or absence of the printing medium P disposed upstream the recording head 34 in the printing medium P-conveying direction and on the carriage 32, and a control means 93 to shift the conveyance of the printing medium P by the carrier rollers 16 (14, 18) to a speed-reduced paper feed control according to a detected condition of the printing medium P by the printing medium detections sensor 51.
