PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen a printer in size equipped with a maintenance unit by loading the maintenance unit on a carrier. SOLUTION: Recording heads 3a, 3b are held by a cradle 40 loaded on the carrier which moves along a paper for recording operation. The maintenance unit 5 includes a thread 51 which is movably held by the cradle 40, wipers 52a, 52b which wipe and clean the recording heads 3a, 3b, and caps 53a, 53b which cover and protect the recording heads 3a, 3b. The wipers 52a, 52b and the caps 53a, 53b are loaded on the thread 51, the wipers 52a, 52b wipe the recording heads 3a, 3b when the thread 51 moves, and the caps 53a, 53b cover the recording heads 3a, 3b when the thread 51 is in a specified position, and is removed from the recording heads 3a, 3b when the thread is in other positions.
