PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus eliminating the need for adjusting a distance from the surface of a contact type image sensor to an original platen glass for each image reading apparatus and capable of partially correcting regions whose resolution is deteriorated. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with an MTF arithmetic means that calculates the MTF of the contact image sensor on the basis of image data obtained by reading a predetermined MTF detection pattern by the contact type image sensor. Regions with a plurality of light receiving elements arranged therein are divided into high MTF regions whose MTF is higher than a predetermined value and low MTF regions whose MTF is lower than the value on the basis of the MTF. Then emphasis processing is applied to at least the low MTF regions. Thus, the regions whose resolution is deteriorated can partially be corrected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
