A spark plug (24) and/or a laser type ignition mechanism (40) generates flames at one or more locations in a combustion chamber (26), as the air fuel mixture is injected into the chamber and subjected to spark ignition at time of the engine compression stroke. The generated flames heats up the remaining air fuel mixture to facilitate compression ignition. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion (IC) engine.
