<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detection system that utilizes an IC tag which eliminates the need for a large number of receivers, and reading operation by the person in charge. <P>SOLUTION: In a communications area A a reader/writer 1 and the IC tag 2 perform a first communication by long-distance radio under the command of a detector 3. Within a communications where B (<A), IC tags 2 perform a second communication by a relatively short distance probe signal. There are two ways of using the IC tag, as a fixed tag a and a mobile tag b. The fixed tag a is installed in a coordinate fixed point, dividing a line and a plane at regular intervals. The mobile tag b is attached to a mobile body, such as "human" body and "moving body". A moving body to which the mobile tag b is attached is identified from the ID of the mobile tag b collected by the detector 3 via a reader/writer 1 according to such a constitution.
