PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing system and method by which image parameters to control brightness, contrast, etc. of displayed images are automatically adjusted to improve image quality. SOLUTION: An image processing system comprises a TGC parameter setting means for analyzing a profile of pixel intensities in a vertical direction on an log-compressed image to automatically set a TGC (time gain compensation) parameter, a gain parameter setting means for calculating a mean brightness of pixels included in the log-compressed image and comparing the calculated mean brightness with a predetermined brightness to thereby automatically set a gain parameter of the log-compressed image, a DR parameter setting means for automatically setting a DR (dynamic range) parameter of a log-compressed image using an edge contrast and a background roughness of the log-compressed image, and a means for applying the set TGC, gain, and DR parameters to the image data to form an image.
