PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper treating device, with which a booklet is flattened more surely than ever. SOLUTION: In the paper treating device equipped with a booklet producing part 4, in which the booklet is produced by folding a plurality of papers, and a square folding device 9, in which a finishing operation is applied to the booklet produced at the booklet producing part 4, the square folding device 9 consists of a clamping jaw 95 for flattening the booklet by pinchingly holding a portion adjoining to the back of the booklet between both the sides of the booklet, a roller 96 for flattening the back by pressing the back of the booklet and a control circuit 26, in which let the clamping jaw 95 pinchingly hold the booklet for flattening the booklet, while let the roller 96 watch and wait the flattening of the back and, after the retaining of the predetermined period of the state, in which letting of the clamping jaw 95 pinchingly holding the booklet and the watching and waiting of the flattening of the back with the roller 96 are kept, is retained till the finishing operation of the next booklet produced in the booklet producing part 4, the flattening of the back is performed by the roller 96 and then the pinchingly holding of the booklet with the clamping jaw 95 is released, is set to be equipped.
