The operating characteristic value of a control system, which includes a control unit (13), solenoid valve (14), and slide gate valve (16) is measured by a pressure sensor (17), and is maintained at the desired value by an automatic controller and both valves. If inadmissible offset of the automatic controller is detected through a first monitoring function, then a controller and the valves maintain the desired value. If through a second monitoring function the desired value is determined to be maintained, then an error in the pressure sensor and the valves is determined. An independent claim is included for an error recognition mechanism.
